Sustainability and Eco-Warriors
At The Grange Academy, sustainability is at the heart of our Learning for Life vision. Through our Eco-Warriors team and a range of exciting, pupil-led projects, we are proud to be working toward achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award. Our mission is to inspire children to take responsibility for their environment - both locally and globally - by learning, leading, and making a lasting impact.
Meet the Eco-Warriors
Our Eco-Warriors are a dedicated group of pupils from across the school who meet regularly with Mrs Jones, our Sustainability Lead. Together, they drive forward initiatives that protect the planet, raise awareness, and promote sustainable living. They work closely with the School Council, staff, parents, and the local community.
Our Focus Areas
We are currently working on three main Eco-Schools topics:
Litter
Our pupils have taken part in The Big School Clean Up, organised regular Community Litter Picks, and even carried out a Beach Clean Up! Each class learns about the impact of litter on wildlife and habitats and is encouraged to take pride in keeping our school and local area clean. Our Eco Class of the Week award celebrates the small actions that make a big difference.
Biodiversity and School Grounds
We are passionate about nurturing wildlife and caring for our school environment. Pupils have planted wildflower seeds, created bee bombs, and taken part in leaf identification sessions. Our Scouts have been instrumental in rejuvenating a once-forgotten allotment space into a developing wildflower garden. We’ve even launched a Bug Hotel Design competition, with the winning design soon to be built on the grounds of local business, Altro!
Waste and Reuse
From encouraging waste-free lunches to promoting a paperless classroom, we are always finding new ways to reduce our footprint. Our Eco-Warriors recently ran a second-hand book sale to support reuse and celebrate a love of reading. All leftover books were donated to the school library or local charities.
Active Travel and Global Citizenship
As part of Walk and Wheel Week, we encouraged families to ditch the car and travel to school sustainably. We are also promoting Travel Tracker in September 2025, a whole-school initiative that rewards classes and pupils for choosing greener travel options.
We link local action to global change. From assemblies on the impact of litter delivered by local councillors to learning about climate change through resources from the Global Oneness Project and Oxfam, our pupils are developing a deep sense of global citizenship.
Outdoor Learning
Our beautiful woodland area is regularly maintained by the Eco-Warriors, who also support printmaking and nature activities during Eco-Week. Plans are underway to develop this further through a Forest School programme, allowing children to learn through immersive outdoor experiences.
Community Collaboration
We believe sustainability is a shared responsibility. That’s why we’re proud of our partnerships—with local businesses, our town councillor, the Scouts, and environmental experts like John O’Connor grounds services. Together, we’ve led workshops, launched environmental competitions, and built momentum for lasting change.
Tracking Progress
Our Climate Action Plan and Eco-Schools Action Plan guide our work throughout the year. We regularly review progress and celebrate achievements through assemblies, newsletters, and our vibrant Eco Board display in school.
Looking Ahead
As we work towards earning the Green Flag Award, we remain committed to making sustainability a central part of school life—empowering our children to care for the planet, speak up for what’s right, and become the changemakers of tomorrow.
Together, we are Learning for Life - and for the planet's future!
